Phoenix Music Scene Manifesto + Sound Wave Music Festival

Aloha Earthlings!
(more specifically those from Phoenix, Arizona and the surrounding southwest area)

Me llamo John Monsoon aka Lightning EyeZ. Eye just got booked to play the upcoming Sound Wave Music Festival at Big Surf Waterpark in Tempe on Saturday April 9, 2011. Eye wanted to take the time to write all the fans of dance music in this region and express my gratitude to you. The FANS make everything happen in music, not big label executives, not tastemaker DJs, nor event producers ... these people are all fans of music, and its the people that make the decisions - remember this fact.

This is the first major dance music festival for Arizona. It is the first of many to come. Of course there have been a large amount of events in our history already; however, this is the first time that a large event producer (Insomniac of Electric Daisy Carnival & Electric Forest) has teamed up with an experienced local producer (Steve Levine) to develop a fresh festival concept for the Grand Canyon State. The most important part is the venue. Big Surf gives us access to a 10,000 person capacity venue! Besides stadiums and arenas, this is the biggest venue we currently have an ability to throw events. As a really cool side-note, Pink Floyd played the entire length “Dark Side of the Moon” at Big Surf back in September, 1972.

To truly understand the epic importance of these facts, we must consider that the true reason why Phoenix’s music scene suffers in comparison to less populated cities like Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, and San Francisco is a complete design flaw that is integrated into economics and politics. The details are not important here, just the main fact: Phoenix lacks enough music venues (of all shapes & sizes) and a decent urban environment to support those establishments (proximity & transit). These two issues create a situation where big artists choose the cities with better music scenes over Phoenix on the best nights like Friday and Saturday.

We must rally together to support this event. There is a 100% guarantee that more events will be held here every summer when 10,000 people show up each time. Insomniac and other big event producers will begin to take notice, and more capital can be invested into making our Phoenix & Arizona music scene more sustainable. More venues will be opened in urban areas like Downtown Phoenix, Mill Avenue District in Tempe, and OldTown Scottsdale - not to mention Tucson, Flagstaff, Prescott and other surrounding cities. Imagine having massive festivals in Sun Devil Stadium (to save the educational budget), and legendary camping festivals in the forests of Northern Arizona (to support sustainable farming & forestry). We won’t have to travel far and wide to experience great music anymore (although that is still recommended and fun). Inversely, more tourism can be generated by our state from people traveling here for great weather and even better events in the Spring, Summer (Northern AZ), and Fall. We can all go to amazing music festivals at least once a month. We just need to make Sound Wave a resounding success, no pun intended.

This is also good for the quality of life in our state. When more investment is made into urban areas, the less limited resources we require, and the more sustainable resources we develop. Sustainability is important for the future of our environment, in addition to the survival of our civilization.

Sustainability also greatly relates to equality. When people interact with each other at events, we get to experience connections with a variety of individuals. We understand that our similarities are much more interesting than our differences. We need to support our fellow humans, embrace the amazing cultural variety in Arizona (especially our Hispanic & Native American roots) and bring everyone together for social bonding events like Sound Wave. We must end the boycott of Arizona, by supporting the things that matter in our lives. Love. Peace. Music. Aloha. ONE.

The Pitch: Green Bull Gives the Earth Wings

Imagine, Red Bull ... one of the coolest companies in the world, took the initiative to figuratively take the “bull by the horns” with the sustainability industry, making it “cool” to be sustainable. This would be a three phase plan, beginning with this advertisement:

Ad Design:
Red Bull is taking the initiative to show people around the world that it is cool to be sustainable. The commercial showcases all of the cool athletics, events, and music that Red Bull is involved with - and makes knowledge that none of these cool things would be possible without sustainability (meaning that most of these things involve nature, like snowboarding, surfing, etc.)

For a limited time only - Red Bull will be releasing new “Green Bull” edition cans to stores worldwide (Basically same can with Green print instead of Red) .... The goal is to see if customers would make their opinions heard by “voting” (buying) the new green cans demonstrating that the average Red Bull customer would like to see Red Bull take the initiative to become a new green/sustainability pioneer.

It is known that Red Bull has taken business policies already on sustainability with its waste management and office power, etc. But this ad campaign would determine if the company should step it up based on popular opinion.

During the “voting” time period when the advertisement is airing, people have the chance to buy this new green can. Depending on the ratio of green cans to red cans will determine if Red Bull will take a new stand for the green industry. This would mean new technology of compostable cans made of hemp plastic (which would innovate the entire aluminum can industry), and make Red Bull a considerable amount of profit. Organic ingredients sourced from Fair Trade farmers. A portion of proceeds of these new “Green Bulls” would go towards sustainable energy such as solar, wind, tidal, biofuels (like hemp ethanol, and algae biodiesel) and other fuels for society’s power needs. This second phase would be the research and development phase to create the new recipe for Green Bull.

Since most music festivals have sustainable edges now - the new Green Bull could sponsor and let the world youth culture know about this through their own popular mediums. This is the third and final phase - marketing.

The advertisement would include background music by Lightning EyeZ, a new track he is releasing called “Green Bull” which, is inspired by the action sports / youth culture lifestyle, with a “hyphy” hip hop beat.

The commercial would end with “Red Bull Gives You Wings. Green Bull Gives the Earth Wings”

Not exactly positive on the time of my set, but be there at 9 PM when the event starts, because you do not want to miss any of the artists on this lineup. Protohype will be spinning all originals, DJ Earth as well - but definitely catch the NEW BOYZ headlining the event. Good night October, Good Morning November - and Aloha to my Lightning Tribe!

The Halloween weekend has passed us by, had some major fun catching up with old friends. Besides a few great parties - Eye have been getting funky in the studio day n night. Also finally had a chance to watch "The Hangover" - siriusly freakin' super funny! Thus, the title of this post.

My first mixtape is still in development, but looking at a release date of Friday, November 5th ...

Lets just say it got a lot more crazy of a project once Eye dived head on into this monsta. But it is definitely worth the wait in SOLID GOLD! The mix is going to be a quick-style preview VIP mash of my live set - also most likely will be recording this via video.

Here's a brand spanking new teaser track from the mixtape, which is going to be named:

"EYErie EYEdentity Volume ONE"

The new track is a remix of Pepper's upcoming single release "Wake Up". Lately Eye have been very inspired by Bassnectar's new "Wildstyle EP" and various Drumstep genre-related tracks such as Pendulum's "Witchcraft (Rob Swire's Drumstep Remix)" or Rusko's "Hold On feat. Amber Collins (Sub Focus Remix)". Eye am naming this new subgenre of dubstep/DNB as "Wildstyle and/or MoombaHop" - straight this is the new progression of unique music scenes coming out of freedom, arts, sustainability and music festivals such as Burning Man.

The Lightning EyeZ Remix of "Wake Up" is a wildstyle dreamscape ... mixing such eclectic genres as reggae, punk, dub, glitch hop, tribal psy-trance, dutch house, and of course a grimey roller coaster ride of distorted resonated basslines. Watch out for the first drop is straight half-step power, and the second drop blends the beat into full-steppin' drum and bass speed. When the main stabbing chorus melody hits the floor - it creates an anthemic stadium-crushing energy that can only be experienced at full volume out of major speaker watts and low-end subwoofers. This is music for the REVOLUTION!

Yet another remix contest that Eye entered last week - very stoked about my track since Eye made it in less than 24 hours and soon to become a Lightning EyeZ classic - its really funky with an inspiring chorus drop - and a mysterious Dracula-esque breakdown that really covers the Hot Chip style with some space jungle vibey tweaks. Eye had a great deal of fun making this last minute. The contest is for a chance to play a set at the MOOGfest in Asheville, North Carolina on Halloween weekend. deadmau5 - CAN EYEZ HAZ VOTEZ???

Actually created quite a few remixes in the last two weeks ... 5 brand new tracks! My personal favorite is the one that Eye created for the deadmau5/Beatport remix contest. Eye spent a lot of time on this mix to really make the dancefloor move & groove to a new unique sound that Eye like to think is a spacey psychedelic jedi jam that is very Moombahton inspired. Positioned at the 111 BPM - it is the only triple number in the beats per minute availability, so Eye really connect with that number. The track has already seen light on some blogs, and has had 1,000 plays on the intraweb in less than a week.

Please give it a listen, leave a comment - and do me a HUGE FAVOR - please vote for the track on beatport.
